Network Decommissioning

Planning to decommission your old equipment can be just as complex as the installation.

When we think of decommissioning and removal of old IT / network assets – simple enough, power it down, remove it and job done!

Not quite…

At Lunar Networks, we like to help you ask the right questions during the planning stages so you can get the best value from your assets.

Timescales?

Removing large infrastructures and installations can take weeks, months to complete, you are thinking of having a partner such as Lunar repair, refurbish, test and resell on your behalf – have you considered commercially how well you can benefit?

We all know the costs of technology reduces with age, the same happens in the refurbished / second user marketplace.

For a moment, think about a hotel chain with 24 hotels, each having two network switches per hotel, a network refresh is currently underway to install new, the project will take 12 months to complete, January until December 2 hotels per month.

The project management team over the 12 months, plan to bring all items back to a central location and work with an ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) company to reuse/recycle, this will be done once the project is complete.

Herin lies the potentially missed benefits.

In January those switches are still in use by many other companies / users around the world and have a market resale value of $1000 each.

In December however, those same switches have much less demand because of aging and have reduced down to $100 each over the 12-month period.

Storage costs.

Collection costs.

Time spent auditing and palletising and shipping to your hardware partner.

At Lunar, we like to get help you get ahead of these curves by assisting with the planning stages not only to execute smooth processes for removal, but we help design the removal from a commercial perspective that works best in your favour.

The difference between waiting too long to engage with a hardware partner at the right time would be $4000 against $40,000 in potential return revenue.

Are you getting the maximum value when physically removing your legacy equipment?

Often when decommissioning takes place, the scope is to take out as quickly as possible, because it’s costing engineer time and money to remove, so things can be missed.

Example:

When decommissioning a network of Cisco Ubr (Universal broadband routers) for time and ease, an engineer might cut through the cable sets, as he’s been told they are destined for scrap and most likely has a hundred other tasks to complete.

Unknown to the engineer, those cable sets are actually in high demand and worth $4-500 each on the second user marketplace.

X100 cabinets of Cisco Ubr = a potential of $50,000 in return revenue has been lost!

At Lunar Networks, this is where we really add that buzz word “value” – knowledge and attention to detail built up over years within the IT / Telecoms industry.

When completing our decommissioning projects, every part is accounted for, removed with care and attention and transported safely.
